Autumn is approaching with a new set of health challenges and opportunities. Cooler weather means it's time to make sure your home is warm and weatherproof for winter. Darker nights and mornings mean more time indoors, so take a look at whether you need to adjust your diet and exercise habits to ensure a happy, healthy time ahead.
Autumn can be a good time to
- Try out new fruit and vegetables with lots of local produce in season
- Find a new exercise class or social club near home and join with friends or neighbours - good for mental and physical health
- Plant flowers and vegetables for winter or spring - on a windowsill, in a window box, allotment or garden
- Check bicycle and car lights are clean and functioning - with a good supply of spare batteries
- Remind children and young people about road and personal safety when walking, cycling and on public transport
- Check batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as you change the clocks
- Have gas appliances serviced and checked for safety - especially any fires that are rarely used
- Get chimneys swept if you have an open fire
- Clean and repair steps and paths and make sure exterior lights at entrances to your home are working
